While it is certainly capable, it is less commonly used in a professional setting than the other programs on this list, but due to its unique layout and features, it is worth considering.

With Modo, you get a sophisticated 3D modeler with a logical and convenient tabbed layout. Its interface is highly customizable, so if you are particular about something or want to experiment with your user interface, it is easy to customize.

Modo seems to have a smaller following, despite coming from Foundry, the makers of several prolific 3D assembly line production tools. Nevertheless, there are ardent followers who often praise the advantages of Modo over the likes of Blender (better layout, more understandable modeling, etc.). Foundry itself offers a wide variety of Modo tutorials that should help anyone new to the software or 3D modeling in general, but there is much less user-generated content than in other programs.

ZBrush is usually a favorite tool among digital artists who prefer working with “digital clay” rather than mesh or parametric modeling.

Maxon also offers lighter (and more affordable) versions in ZBrushCore and ZBrushCoreMini (which are completely free), but ZBrush is where you’ll find all the best features.

EASE OF USE

Since ZBrush is so specialized for digital sculpture, it is also very simplified to use for this application. If you are familiar with the workflow, switching between brushes and the most common tools will be second nature. That being said, ZBrush does offer a lot of other features for such a focused program – and this can be a bit confusing for newcomers at first. Whether you have trouble finding important features hidden in the drop-down menu or are simply confused by the variety of options for something as simple as a single brush, ZBrush can be intimidating for newcomers. Let’s start our 3Ds Max review with a brief description of the program. 3Ds Max is one of the first 3D graphics editors and dates back to 1990. During its existence, the package has managed to change several names. Since 2005, the program is released under the familiar name Autodesk 3Ds Max. The application is rightly considered one of the most extensive packages for 3D modeling, which contains a lot of plug-ins and add-ons to perform a variety of tasks.

Traditionally, this program is considered a professional tool for architects and interior designers. The reason for this is the convenience in 3D modeling of solid objects, greater freedom in creating models and quality modules for photorealistic visualization. However, modern versions of Autodesk 3Ds Max allow you to perform a huge number of functions and go far beyond architectural models.

FreeCAD was released back in 2002, and although still in beta testing, its development has progressed considerably. It is designed to make the process of creating 3D versions of real objects as efficient and simple as possible.

A very useful feature is the ability to start with a static 2D sketch, from which you can then build the final 3D model. FreeCAD works well on Windows and Mac, and you can easily export the model as STL, OBJ or even DXF files, for example for CNC.

Although FreeCAD was developed primarily for machine tools, it can be used for 3D printing as well. Moreover, FreeCAD is an open source program, so you can work with Python.

FreeCAD is ideal for users with some design experience, as some of the tools can be difficult for beginners. But overall, it is a very powerful free 3D modeling tool.

For ease of drawing in FreeCAD there is the possibility to write scripts in python, and for minor operations you can use the python console. The console, however, is elementary: it has no command history.

Before each start FreeCAD looks through the contents of the system directories, as well as the ~/.FreeCAD/Mod/ directory. The scripts located there will be used in the future.

Scripts in FreeCAD fall into two categories: scripts called from the command line (to run them, you must first load the python import command containing their module), and scripts run from the GUI. You can always reload the former with the reload command, but to reload the latter (if you have made any changes to the source code), you will need to restart FreeCAD. Let’s first consider working with the first ones.
