    Updated 20/3-09:

    Patching manually leaves room for mistakes, so I tried once again and it seems that the "Photonmap" tab now stays visible all the time.
    For an error reporting build I suggest to wait for a version not manually patched.

     

     

    Based on the diff output from blendiac (http://www.mediafire.com/file/t1gt3csg2bw) I managed to make a win32 build of the photonmapping works of farsthary & broken.

    Yeah, me too. Only a black screen. only enabled GI in the rendering options and material Options (mirror transp.), but nothing happens...

    seems the GI tab hides behind the render tab or something....I finaly got it to appear and then everything is self explanitory.....it's odd though how it is sometimes useable and sometimes hidden again(upon opening)....I will go post this on the tracker(if there is one)as soon as I can single out the cause.

    Thanks a lot! GI panel is no longer behind the render panel.

    @ whose who a looking for instructions:
    following the link above there's a gzip archive with some example files in "test suite" folder. Also you can find many web pages on using photon mapping for different raytracers, basic priciples are the same.

    I can't seem to get this to work on windows. Everything is set up, I press render, and it just sits there saying 'Calculating Photons 0%' forever. I know photon mapping is slow, but it can't be that slow...

    Sorry, the message is "Shooting Diffuse Photons 0%" not calculating photons...

    Matt, have you tried rendering test files? Photon mapping is slower than simple raytracing, though it is still reasonably fast.

    I've experienced "Shooting Diffuse Photons 0%" problem when trying to use spot lamps. Using sun and spherical lamps everything is ok. Probably, spot lamps currently are not supported.

    Finally, the photon mapping in Blender! I have been waiting years for this! Blender Internal renderer is becoming more and more powerful. The next step is... dispersion! Spectral rendering, physically correct materials... But one thing at a time, keep the good work.
