Autodesk Maya is a powerful 3D animation software used by industry professionals to create high-quality visual effects and animated graphics.

The high successes of works that used Maya in its early stages cemented the program’s status, as it is said that a large number of Academy Award winners for Best Visual Effects during the 2000s made films that used the software in their creation.

Maya has found favor with customizable workspaces, allowing users to customize the software to suit their workflow. 3D modeling capabilities are available in Maya’s polygon, NURB, and sculpture modeling tools, as well as the UV editing tool, but the amazing set of animation and editing tools, beyond simple modeling, gives it the edge.

Some people prefer Maya’s cached playback feature, which makes viewing animations in real time smoother and faster than with other 3D modeling programs. Recent updates include a new experience for new users that makes for a much softer landing, with gamified introductions to the software and key tools.

In the method of work Autodesk Maya is close to another product of the company – 3DsMax. But compared with him in Maya animation functions are realized more thoroughly. In addition, the program is interesting in the ability to work with the dynamics of hard and soft bodies, ease of overlaying textures and convenient UV-mapping. If we talk about building 3D models for 3D printing, it should be noted that Autodesk Maya on this is not oriented at all. However, the variety of its capabilities allows you to use the program for these purposes.

Features of the program

Autodesk Maya is equipped with a variety of tools for high-quality and convenient work with three-dimensional graphics. In it you can find everything you want a demanding modeler, as well as pick up your own algorithm of actions. A short list of what the application offers:

Working with curves, including NURBS;
Polygonal modeling, possibility of retopology;
Several ways of overlaying materials, textures, as well as convenient UV mapping (sweeping);

Modo, described as one of the most affordable yet powerful 3D modeling and animation tools, is somewhere in the middle of this list. While it is certainly capable, it is less commonly used in a professional setting than the other programs on this list, but due to its unique layout and features, it is worth considering.

With Modo, you get a sophisticated 3D modeler with a logical and convenient tabbed layout. Its interface is highly customizable, so if you are particular about something or want to experiment with your user interface, it is easy to customize.

Modo seems to have a smaller following, despite coming from Foundry, the makers of several prolific 3D assembly line production tools. Nevertheless, there are ardent followers who often praise the advantages of Modo over the likes of Blender (better layout, more understandable modeling, etc.). Foundry itself offers a wide variety of Modo tutorials that should help anyone new to the software or 3D modeling in general, but there is much less user-generated content than in other programs.

FEATURES

MeshFusion
Recent updates have enhanced the MeshFusion logic modeling space in the software, providing more flexibility to make changes to specific mesh attributes. Designers can assign meshes a role based on which they interact with other meshes. For example, a single mesh set to subtractive clipping will remove its shape from the positive mesh, while a mesh set to intersection clipping will remove everything on the positive mesh except where the two meshes intersect. It’s an intuitive way to build meshes, reminiscent of the Boolean functions in some extremely simple CAD programs like Tinkercad, but Modo takes it to a whole new level.

Logical values for mPath visualization
Modo has a proprietary ray tracing system called “mPath” and some recent updates have made it easy to implement animated effects using logical operations during rendering. The simplest example is the one Modo provides in its release notes for 15.2: implementing cutout animations in rendering. He demonstrates a video in which a product rendering case is cut out to show its copper interior. This feature is ideal for presentations if you’re using it for product development, but it also has great potential for demos and simple animations regardless of your application.

Special Toolpipe tools
More so than other 3D modelers, Modo has a dedicated interface, but it also offers customizable tool options. Using the program’s special tool creation feature called “Toolpipe”, users can create new tools from the program’s more concise initial settings, changing the way they feel and interact with models. This level of customization may not be for everyone, but it makes Modo a uniquely customizable experience and allows for limited tool clutter. Users can redesign tools to suit their needs and optimize their personal workflows in ways that other software simply cannot.

Probably the most advanced digital modeler on this list, ZBrush is the main offering from Pixologic. In 2022, the company was acquired by another 3D software provider Maxon, the company behind Cinema4D. ZBrush is usually a favorite tool among digital artists who prefer working with “digital clay” rather than mesh or parametric modeling.

Maxon also offers lighter (and more affordable) versions in ZBrushCore and ZBrushCoreMini (which are completely free), but ZBrush is where you’ll find all the best features.

EASE OF USE

Since ZBrush is so specialized for digital sculpture, it is also very simplified to use for this application. If you are familiar with the workflow, switching between brushes and the most common tools will be second nature. That being said, ZBrush does offer a lot of other features for such a focused program – and this can be a bit confusing for newcomers at first. Whether you have trouble finding important features hidden in the drop-down menu or are simply confused by the variety of options for something as simple as a single brush, ZBrush can be intimidating for newcomers. Luckily, this modeling program has a very active community with a huge amount of tutorials for all levels of experience.

If you’re just getting started, check out Pixologic’s ZClassroom for free tutorials from the developer to familiarize yourself with the interface and get you started in the right direction.

FEATURES

Huge set of brushes
ZBrush is probably best known for the amazing set of “brushes” (virtual sculpting tools) it offers for manipulating solids. These are tools that allow artists to sculpt digital clay with efficiency – eliminating the need to cut out the smallest details as with real clay.

The program comes with over 300 customizable brushes by default. And if that’s not enough, you can customize your own brushes or simply grab third-party brushes from marketplaces like ZBrushGuides.

Massive number of polygons
ZBrush can handle up to 100 million polygons per mesh, depending on your hardware, before you start to experience difficulties in modeling. The software is customized with Pixologic’s unique software that bypasses the traditional limitations of 3D voxels with “Pixols” – the “smart pixel” (as Pixologic describes it). Pixols are essentially 2D pixels that have additional information that represents depth, making them “2.5D”. During visualization, pixels turn into familiar old voxels.

Dynamic meshes with DynaMesh
When you need to stretch, deform, or otherwise add to a mesh while you’re detailing a digital model, ZBrush has you covered with DynaMesh. This feature automatically updates the model’s topology, allowing you to dramatically reshape the base model without deforming its polygons.

This feature probably won’t replace subdivision for later stages of your project, but it will simplify your workflow in the early stages, saving you a lot of time and frustration.

Blender is a free software for creating and editing 3D graphics. Due to its cross-platform, open source, accessibility and functionality, the package has gained well-deserved popularity not only among beginners, but also among advanced 3D modelers. As the program develops, it is chosen as a working tool for more and more serious projects, which is not surprising. In fact, this application is almost as good as more advanced 3D graphics packages in terms of features and functionality. And at the same time, everything is free.

The program will be a great help to get acquainted with 3D graphics and the functioning of basic tools for creating and editing 3D objects, because Blender combines a set of options that are separately found in professional 3D editors. It is possible to say without pretending to say that it contains a little bit of every known program for creating 3D models. But at the same time it is a completely independent, unique package of 3D graphics, not like any other application. Let’s tell you more about it.

Interesting features

Blender is positioned as an application for creating and editing three-dimensional graphics, visualization, animation, creating computer games and even sculpting. Quite a serious program that requires serious hardware resources, you will say. But the first surprise the package presents at the stage of downloading the installation files – their weight is about 70 MB. Unthinkable for software of this level! Nevertheless, the developers managed to equip the program with all the necessary functions, which are fully functional and demonstrate excellent performance. An additional advantage is the stable and rapid development of the package thanks to a professional team of developers.

Today it is a full-fledged 3D editor, in which the user is met by a fully programmable interface and a unique internal file system. The shell of the program at first glance may seem awkward and incomprehensible, but after setting up hotkeys to work in Blender becomes simple and convenient. As a programming language the application uses Python, knowing which you can create your own tools, edit the interface and the very principle of the program. A pleasant bonus is the availability of the package on various operating systems of both bit sizes: owners of Windows, GNU/Linux and Mac OSX computers will be able to master the program.

The post 3DS MAX: a quick summary appeared first on Call IGraph.

]]>
Let’s start our 3Ds Max review with a brief description of the program. 3Ds Max is one of the first 3D graphics editors and dates back to 1990. During its existence, the package has managed to change several names. Since 2005, the program is released under the familiar name Autodesk 3Ds Max. The application is rightly considered one of the most extensive packages for 3D modeling, which contains a lot of plug-ins and add-ons to perform a variety of tasks.

Traditionally, this program is considered a professional tool for architects and interior designers. The reason for this is the convenience in 3D modeling of solid objects, greater freedom in creating models and quality modules for photorealistic visualization. However, modern versions of Autodesk 3Ds Max allow you to perform a huge number of functions and go far beyond architectural models.

So, the program is well implemented in the system of particles, as well as tools for animation. Due to a well-designed mechanism for calculating the physics of modeling the behavior of hard and soft bodies is not very difficult. Users control 3D models taking into account the actual laws of physics, thanks to which it is possible to achieve incredible realism. And it is impossible not to mention the HairandFur module, with which the creation and “styling” of hair and wool happens in two clicks.

Program Features

So, what can Autodesk 3Ds Max, and why is it so popular among users? Let’s understand. First of all, it is necessary to list the main and the most impressive capabilities and features that cause many people to study the capabilities of the package. Namely:

The main function of the program is to create and edit 3D graphics. The other options are designed to complement the created objects and bring them to a realistic appearance. The program is equipped with a huge variety of modifiers, tools for working with models. 3Ds Max offers such types of design of three-dimensional objects:

Polygonal modeling. The most common type of 3D-modeling, found in many packages of three-dimensional graphics. Can be used to develop models of varying complexity;

Primitive-based modeling. 3Ds Max contains a built-in library of standard objects, the so-called primitives. In many cases, the creation of models begins with them, because such primitives are applicable to a variety of modifiers;
Overview 3Ds Max primitives

Based on splines. Also one of the basic methods of modeling. Concludes in the construction of the framework of the product of three-dimensional curves (splines). On its basis, the 3D-object itself is generated;
Based on NURBS curves. NURBS, or Non-Uniform Rational B-spline, is a special technology for 3D model development. It is ideal for modeling organics and objects that have smooth surfaces;
3Ds Max NURBS curves overview

Based on Bézier surfaces. A special way of 3D modeling based on Bézier curves. It is often applied to separate parts of the 3D model, for which a network of control points is created. With their help, the surface can be stretched in any direction.
3Ds Max Bézier surface overview

Autodesk 3Ds Max is a really powerful program for visualization, compatible with many modules for modeling light, materials used and various effects. The application provides flexible control over settings including exposure, depth of field, and much more.
