    As far as I can see the OS indicated by this download seems to be wrong: It's Linux 64 bit alright, but not for the PPC platform.

    $ file blender
    blender: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, not stripped

    Ok, I know that there is probably something stupid I do or I do not do, but it does not start at all. I am on Ubuntu 10.4, I double checked the permissions, I made sure that I can run it as an executable, there is nothing to do. When I click to start blender, nothing happens. Stand back, I will try science... Seriously, if someone can point me in a direction.

    i had the same problem.
    so is this happening only on my builds?
    try ( sudo apt-get install python3.1-dev )
    i think that was it.

    You nailed it gdawg. I tried sudo apt-get install python3.1-dev and it works now. Thanks buddy !!!

    @iozk

    There are many things that can make it not work but you need to give me more info on the problem. Run it in a terminal what does it say? try reading the comments from Fish.
    I have updated the build that might help.

    Can someone direct me to installation instruction site? i'm fairly new to linux and I would like to try a blender version newer than 2.49b on my linux box

    What kind of instruction would you like?
    how to run builds from graphicall?
    how to compile blender?
    or just using linux in general?

    Had a problem running this one.

    Opened up a terminal session into \blender25 folder and tried to run it. It came back with Blender not installed error message.

    I sudo apt-get blender which installed 2.49b, but also all of the required libraries. This build now works

    Tried this build on Fedora 13 x86_64 (out of curiosity). I got:
    ./blender: error while loading shared libraries: libtiff.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    I guess libtiff.so.4 is a debian thing. So, no worries.

    try looking for just "libtiff" or "libtiff4" not libtiff.so.4
    Yaroslav_L
    Works fine, but where is OSA (Anti-Aliasing)???

    "libtiff" or "libtiff4" still yeilds no result. Like the package doesn't exist. Which package provides that in debian? Maybe I can find the yum equivalent.

    Sorry for double post, but where can I find the "unlimited clay" - doesnt seem to be in this build, is it?

    I do not Know why, a lot of the time thing brake from the changes like lately i have problems building blender because of the changes being made. you should see if it is in the bug tracker if it is not report it:)

    Hi I am experiencing a trouble with baking normals in 2.5 builds as witnessed in the following picture

    http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=4519

    Is there anything I have to be aware of that has changed in 2.5 recently?

    By the way someone should contact a developer to look at the baking code. If you press the "bake" button several times, Blender crashes.
    *comment from the builder
    gdawg
    @Robin

    It looks like if you select the low poly first that might help. I would try the second part of this tutorial:
    http://www.blendercookie.com/2010/07/15/a-stylized-dragon-part-5/
    and you can let the devs Know about that bug at:
    "http://www.blender.org/development/report-a-bug/"
    best of luck:)
    Paulo Bardes
    Works in Ubuntu 10.04
    Mario Mey
    Yeah, I already posted that topic about shapes keys in BGE in the but tracker. Thanks for the reply.
    Joe
    Thanks for the build, will try it right now.

    I hope some of those issues are fixed..

    Crashes all over the place since offical beta 3 and followup revisions:
    Crash when having a complex scene open, then opening a new one
    Crash after rendering a HD-image when trying to save it (most anoying)
    Crashes on smoke stuff, smoke cache doesnt load from external file, even so blender states as "valid 300 frames"
    I just baked smoke for 3h, then rendered 1h an image. When I tryed to save the rendered image, blender crashed. When I tryed to reload the smoke cache, nothing happens.

    This occured multiple times on different computers, all running ubuntu 10.04 64bit.

    @Joe
    let me know if things work out:) and if you can replicate the bug let the devs knew it helps a lot:)

    @gdawg

    Yeah I will do so and encourage everybody else to do the same -
    Blender´s got in the main menu under "help" a link to report a bug, which leads you to the right website.. you need to register, but no big deal.
    I recently reported a bug which is fixed now, just a week later, thats increadible. With commercial software you cant even think of this!

    you need to turn off relative paths in user prefs file tab then check run renderer in the render tab under luxrender engine configuration, then set the path to your luxrender executable.
    Toady
    That did the trick, but now I have a new question (newbish). What do I have to do to get to the material settings in LuxRender?

    gdawg
    I have not played around with it that much but as far as changing the color of an object i just change it in the material tap.
    Toady
    Yeah I've got the settings correct now, I believe. In 2.49b there was a script you ran that had all the LuxRender material settings, hdr/lighting settings etc. Is that not accessible in 2.5 anymore? I guess I can't use the 2.49b script due to the different versions of python?
    *comment from the builder
    gdawg
    the thing is that the luxrender exporter is still very much in development so some things may not be there:)
    Toady
    No problem, I appreciate all the help. And thanks for including the exporter in your build. It is a step in the right direction.
    Toady
    Oh I see now. The material settings get baked right in to the blender gui. That is a nice touch. I was expecting to see the old LuxRender outdated gui settings window.
